Single Origin of the Month: Rwanda Karenge Natural

The Rwanda Karenge Natural is absolutely delicious! The small farms in the subdistrict of Karenge range in altitude from about 1,600 meters all the way up to 1,900 meters. This high elevation cultivates complex sugars and acids in the coffee cherry, resulting in sweeter and more complex coffee.

Karenge has a structured brightness in the cup, with rindy citrus and lemon zest, and a bit of black tea-like bittering in the finish. This is a straight-forward Rwanda with a grain-like sweetness in light roasts that is like toasted rice or puffed honey wheat. A little more development brings about a flavor of maple cookie and toasted sugar.

This offering is exemplary of Rwandan coffees with dynamic fruit notes of apricot and lime with cinnamon spice, black tea, vanilla, red apple and caramel sweetness. Full heavy body and rounded acidity. Finish shows fruity cascara and chocolate notes.
